Our labor council family is deeply saddened tonight with the news of the passing of our brother Joe Louis Wildmen. Joe just recently retired after decades of passionately fighting for workers. With the extra time he had after retirement Joe decided to serve the labor council as our Secretary-Treasurer. He was just in the office Friday afternoon volunteering to take on assignments. We mourn your loss brother and in your memory promise to fight like hell for the living.

Rest in peace my friend.

The North Bay Labor Council stands strongly against racism, hate and violence of any kind

If you haven't watched this yet, please do. It's a reminder that we're coming out of a very dark time when we had an anti-union president and administration. What a beautiful relief it is to have a new President who supports Unions and working people.

Watch it here. And enjoy!!

Last week, President Joe Biden had a message for Amazon: I’m watching.

“Workers in Alabama — and all across America — are voting on whether to organize a union in their workplace,” he tweeted, along with an accompanying video. “It’s a vitally important choice — one that should be made without intimidation or threats by employers.”

Biden didn’t name the employer involved, but it was clear to anyone paying attention to one of the biggest union battles in recent US history that he was talking about the e-commerce giant Amazon.

Every two years, the State Democratic Party holds ADEM (Assembly District Election Meetings) where candidates file and run for these seats. 14 candidates are elected in each Assembly District to represent that district at the state level. There is an attempt to achieve gender balance (7 women and 7 men).

The deadline to file as a candidate has passed as well as to register to vote in this election. In the past, these were in person elections but due to the pandemic, this election is being held by mail. Ballots are due February 3rd.

App-based Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, Instacart and Postmates are sponsoring Proposition 22, spending a record-shattering $185 million to write their own rules.

The Press Democrat recommends a yes vote on Proposition 22, claiming that public interests are best served by preserving flexible hours, variable schedules and extra income earned by independent contractors in the “gig economy.”

The labor movement urges voters to reject Proposition 22.

A very important phonebank has been set up to call into Arizona for Mark Kelly who's running against Martha McSally for the seat originally held by John McCain. While we need Kelly in Arizona, his election just became even more urgent.

A deepening COVID-19 crisis–now surging in most California agricultural counties–puts farmworkers in the pandemic’s crosshairs. Thousands of farm and packinghouse workers have contracted the virus in the agricultural counties of Imperial, Kern, Kings, Tulare, Merced, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Monterey, Ventura. Farmworkers in the North Bay are at risk too.
