Resolution Supporting Pride Month and LGBTQ+ Workers
Resolution 2026-04
WHEREAS, the labor movement is founded on the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that solidarity among working people is strongest when all workers are treated with dignity, respect, and equality; and
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ workers have long contributed to our unions, workplaces, and communities while facing discrimination, harassment, and barriers to economic opportunity; and
WHEREAS, following the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion, organized labor increasingly recognized that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is an attack on working people and a threat to worker solidarity; and
WHEREAS, Pride At Work was officially recognized as an AFL-CIO constituency group in 1997 and has since played a critical role in advancing workplace nondiscrimination protections, domestic partner benefits, marriage equality, and full inclusion for LGBTQ+ workers; and
WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO has consistently supported efforts to prohibit workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and has affirmed that all workers deserve equal rights, equal opportunity, and equal protection under the law; and
WHEREAS, attacks on LGBTQ+ people continue to occur in workplaces, schools, communities, and state legislatures across the nation, making it essential that organized labor remain steadfast in its commitment to equality, fairness, and human dignity; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month commemorates the courage, sacrifice, and achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals and serves as a reminder that the struggle for justice and equality is inseparable from the struggle for workers' rights;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Pierce County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO proudly recognizes and celebrates Pride Month and the contributions of LGBTQ+ workers, union members, and leaders throughout our labor movement; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Pierce County Central Labor Council encourages affiliated unions, delegates, and members to support and engage with Pride At Work and other efforts that advance equality and justice for LGBTQ+ workers; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Pierce County Central Labor Council recommits itself to building a labor movement where every worker—regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, or background—can participate fully, organize freely, and share equally in the dignity and rewards of their labor.
