Tipped Workers

Over four million workers in America rely on tips to make ends meet. Many of these workers are women of color earning less than $3 an hour in some states. Workers relying on tips often have time on the clock where they perform tasks for their tips, and time where they do ‘untipped’ side-work, when a waitress sets tables for example.

Under the Trump Administration, the Department of Labor has tried to allow increases in the amount of side work, or untipped hours, an employer can require. In effect, taking away the primary source of income from workers living with the lowest minimum wage.

On September 7 Joe Biden said, “It's not enough to just thank our essential workers, we need to pay them. As president, I’ll Raise the minimum wage to $15, end the tipped minimum wage, end the sub-minimum wage for people with disabilities, ensure everyone has strong benefits.”
