An important meeting was held Thursday at the White House as the first female vice president, Kamala Harris, gathered with women labor leaders. The vice president called together the small group to discuss tackling the pandemic, creating an equitable recovery and getting women back to work. Attendees included AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler (IBEW), American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten, National Education Association President Becky Pringle, SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry, United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero, UAW Vice President Cindy Estrada and National Domestic Workers Alliance Executive Director Ai-jen Poo.

On Wednesday night, Shuler and Estrada convened the entire AFL-CIO Committee on Women Workers to brainstorm content for the meeting with Harris. The vice president agreed to having more meetings with this group in the future. “Women’s leadership at work! Thank you, Madam Vice President, for bringing us together to discuss a racial and gender equitable recovery,” Shuler said after the meeting. “Looking forward to continuing our work together to create life-changing opportunities for women and good paying jobs for all.”
