"FAIRBURN, Ga. — A staggering number of people are now unemployed following the state of Georgia's shelter-in-place order as a result of COVID-19.

It has pushed many families to food banks as they wait for government assistance to put food on their tables. Fortunately, help is on the way. On Saturday morning, the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council is hosting a drive-thru food giveaway in Fairburn to help feed the families of more than 300 struggling union workers.

The Labor of Love food giveaway event is taking place at Crossroads Church-South Fulton in collaboration with the United Way and various local food pantries. The Labor Council is calling the affected workers the backbone of Georgia's economy.

In the past month, a record number of Georgians have filed for unemployment. Without stable income, many of the affected workers are struggling to put food on their tables for their families. To combat some of that, on Saturday morning, they are receiving free groceries. The giveaway begins at 10 a.m. and runs until noon.
