The Dallas AFL-CIO Labor Council meeting on October 20 committed to “home stretch” activities to win the November 8 elections. Our door-to-door canvassing, our phone banking, and our other public activities (see “more actions” below) take on special significance now that winning seems close at hand.

State Representative candidates Rhetta Bowers, Terry Meza, and Victoria Neave all expressed their thanks to union representatives and urged us toward a splendid final effort. Political Director Lorraine Montemayor reported that labor’s candidates have a lot to be grateful for. An example: Dallas activists have knocked on 1,974 doors so far in this campaign! More thousands of phone calls have been made!

Solidarity Forever

The October 20 meeting included ongoing solidarity efforts with our growing list of friends:

  • We passed a resolution from the Workers Defense Project for fair treatment for construction workers on school district projects.
  • We agreed to send a delegate to the Young Workers State Summit in Houston January 19-21. The Building Trades and the Transit Union are also sending delegates.
  • We will donate $500 to the Dallas NAACP in solidarity with their efforts to protect African Americans from violence.
  • We will send a delegate to the Coalition of Labor Union Women leadership conference in Las Vegas November 12
